It requires incredible strength and maturity to choose this option. You love your child and want the best for them, which may include having another family raise them. You have rights and are free to change your mind at any time until you sign legal papers. Here are a few things to think about.

You Have Time After Giving Birth

Most states require a waiting period after your baby is born before you can agree to the adoption. During childbirth, your body undergoes significant hormonal changes. You may be exhausted from delivery, too.

As a result, you are given time to rest and recuperate before making any decisions. Your baby is legally yours until you sign papers giving your consent for the adoption. 

In Arizona, you cannot sign any legal papers for 72 hours (3 days) after the birth of your child. In Washington, you cannot sign anything for 48 hours after giving birth. 

The waiting period is for your protection. You can choose to spend as much time as you like with your baby. If you change your mind during this time period, you are free to take your baby home with you. 

However, once you sign legal papers permitting your child to be adopted, the decision cannot be changed. It is considered irrevocable. The adoptive parents legally become your child’s parents with full authority to make decisions.
