How to Choose the Right Adoptive Family

Today, the birth mother selects a family for her child. Your choice significantly impacts your happiness with the adoption process, but don’t stress. You will know the right family when you see them.

Many couples are waiting to love and care for your child. Adoption processes are far different from what they were even 5 years ago. Take some time to look at our current waiting families, and let the adoption specialists at Antioch Adoptions help you find the right one.

Are the Potential Adoptive Parents Safe?

Every couple wishing to adopt must qualify first. Qualification requires checking their home to ensure it’s safe for a child, reviewing their financial and medical records, plus completing criminal background checks, including fingerprinting.

Additionally, they answer questionnaires, provide personal references, and create a profile with photos or a video. The rigorous screening ensures we thoroughly vet them.

What Do I Look For in a Family?

Make a list of the characteristics that are essential to you. What are your “gotta haves?” Talk with us about your vision for how you want your child to be raised.

Here are some questions to get you thinking:

  • What environment do you want them to grow up in? The city? On a farm?
  • Do you want them to be the oldest child or have immediate siblings?
  • How important are things like education, religion, hobbies, etc.?
  • How about their extended family? Would you like it to be large, with lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins, or would you prefer a small, intimate family?
  • Are they open to the type of adoption you want? Open? Semi-open? Closed?
  • What are your thoughts about discipline?
  • Are you a dog or a cat person?
  • What are your favorite types of music, movies, and food? Ask them about theirs.

What’s important to you should be important to them. Share your answers with us so we can present you with profiles that closely match what you’re looking for.

Should I Meet Them Before Giving Birth?

We encourage expectant mothers and potential adoptive couples to meet before their baby is born. The sooner you can build a relationship, the more comfortable you will be with one another.

Adoption involves a great deal of trust on everyone’s part. Matching with a couple is much like a dating app. You’ve selected a couple based on their video, but it isn’t until you meet them that you find out who they truly are.

We’ll facilitate the meeting between you and the couple you’ve chosen to help guide the conversation. We want you to be secure in your choice.
