Why Do Women Choose Adoption?
Most women who choose adoption for their children do so because they want to give them a chance at a better life. Whether they’re struggling financially, physically, or emotionally, these mothers recognize they are not in a place to raise this child.
The women we speak with are from all backgrounds, ages, races, and religions. Their incomes and marital status vary as well. Some are already raising other children and don’t feel they’re capable of supporting another child.
In a survey conducted by BraveLove, in partnership with the National Council for Adoption (NCFA) and the Opt Institute, these characteristics were found:
- Private domestic adoptions increased between 2019 and 2022 (the most recent data).
- The average age of a mother placing her child for adoption is 26 years.
- Over 80% of mothers experiencing an unexpected pregnancy played an active role in choosing the adoptive family.
- By choosing an open or semi-open adoption, 78% of these women had contact with their adopted child and the adoptive family.
How Do I Know the Adoptive Families Are Safe?
Before being accepted into the Antioch Adoptions program, each family undergoes extensive screening, which includes the following:
- Background checks
- Fingerprinting
- References
- A Home Study conducted by a Case Manager
- Official legal paperwork required by either the state of Washington or Arizona
- Assessment of financial and health stability
- Reasons and motivations to adopt
- Required adoption and parenting education
A woman experiencing an unexpected pregnancy’s biggest concern when considering a potential adoptive couple is often the couple’s willingness to have ongoing contact. Since open or semi-open adoptions are more common today, birth mothers want to know that the couple they choose will regularly communicate with them.
How Will I Know If Adoption Is the Right Choice to Make?
More than anything, the team at Antioch Adoptions wants you to feel confident that you are making the right decision for you and your baby. We promise to provide a thorough explanation of the adoption process, medical services, and counseling. We’ll also ensure you understand your rights.
This decision is entirely yours, and we will never try to influence or pressure you. You are free to step away at any point before signing the legal paperwork, which can only happen after your baby is born.
