A legal adoption permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities of raising a child from the child’s biological parent(s) to the adoptive parents. Adoption establishes a lifelong relationship between the adoptive parents and the adoptee, which can also include the child’s biological family.

The Changing Face of Adoption

Myths and misunderstandings surround adoption. In the past, due to the social stigma of being an “unwed” mother, women were forced to “give up” their babies for adoption. Often, they had no idea who adopted them or where they even went. Contact was impossible, and women were denied access to the paperwork they were forced to sign.

Fast forward several decades and the adoption process has completely flipped. Today, the expectant mother or birth mother can choose the family who raises her child. She determines the future she hopes her child will have.

In addition to selecting the adoptive couple, the expectant mother can choose whether to have contact with the adoptive family and her child or not. She and the adoptive couple can create a Contact Agreement determining the amount and type of contact they each hope to have.
