What Are the Different Types of Adoption?
If you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and thinking through your options, adoption is one path that allows you to make intentional choices for your–and your child’s–future. At Antioch Adoptions, we believe you should have the support and guidance you need to feel confident about your decision.
Adoption empowers you to choose the type of family your child will grow up in, as well as the level of relationship you’d like to maintain over the years. We know how difficult navigating an adoption can feel, and we are here to help you walk through the process with care and respect.
It’s best to start with understanding the different types of adoption plans.
The Three Types of Adoption Plans
When you create an adoption plan, you can decide if you’d like a relationship with your child and the adoptive family, and what that relationship can look like. These are the three main types of adoption:
Open Adoption
In an open adoption, you can have a relationship with your child and their adoptive family. This might include phone calls, letters, or in-person visits. Open adoption allows you to have an ongoing role in your child’s life while knowing they are growing up in a safe and loving home.
Semi-Open Adoption
With a semi-open adoption, communication is more limited and often goes through the agency or an adoption attorney. You may receive updates through letters and photos, but you won’t have direct contact with the adoptive family.
Closed Adoption
In a closed adoption, no identifying information is shared between you and the adoptive family. Records are sealed, and the family raises the child without contact from the birth parents. While less common today, this option is available if you feel it is best for your circumstances.
You Have Choices Every Step of the Way
One of the greatest strengths of adoption is that you remain in control of the process. You can:
- Select the adoptive family who will raise your child.
- Decide what level of communication you’d like after placement.
- Receive support from our staff throughout your journey.
You deserve the information and support you need to plan your best future. We are here to listen, answer questions, and walk alongside you.
