Do I Have What It Takes To Be A Parent?
When considering parenting, thinking through and discussing specific issues is critical. Start by asking yourself the following questions:
- Will I have my family or partner’s financial and emotional support to parent?
- Where will my baby and I live?
- Will the father of my baby be involved in parenting?
- How will I afford medical and child care?
- Can I continue my education or work if I parent?
These are just a few of the questions to consider. Whether you are a single parent or with a partner, we will provide you with needed resources and referrals for assistance.
Moving Forward
Although being a parent may not have been what you planned on doing at this time, with determination, you can make it happen. Having a strong support system is essential. It is possible to continue your education or employment while pregnant and parenting.
Through Title IX, schools must make accommodations for pregnant or parenting women. It is against the law for the school to discriminate against you. You must be allowed excused absences due to pregnancy or childbirth for as long as your doctor says necessary.
The state of Washington has also provided employment protections for pregnant or nursing workers. If your place of employment has eight or more employees, you cannot be discriminated against based on pregnancy or childbirth.
